Clearly, I’m not in position to critique or give a review that will add some additional information to what has been already added. However, such an astonishing work deserves all the appreciation.
I still remember the past time when my brother was reading it and I wasn’t paying much attention to it. Now, I’m just saying ” God, what have I been missing all these period ?!!!!.” It’s wonderful, astonishing, outstanding, and fantastic work by Arthur Golden. Golden has introduced us to many information that weren’t known to many people about Geisha culture in Japan. It’s like a culture within another culture. What Golden had done is that he had collected information about Geisha and then upon these information he created this historical fiction novel. Geisha is a term that refers to an artist and not like what may others think that it refers to a prostitute!. Geisha are expected to master different skills such as dancing, playing on some musical instruments, entertaining men in tea-houses .. etc. The novel is about a normal poor girl, called Sayuri ( Chyio ), who was taken from her hometown, with her sister, to Kayoto to be adopted by family in Gion. She later goes to school to get education so she becomes a geisha. However, her life grows even harder due to the problems she gets into. Inspite of all those ups and downs, Sayuri manages to be a successful geisha who could change her destiny or what she believes it’s her destiny to what she hopes and wishes to get.
Moreover, the novel shows not only geisha world but the suffering and agony that Japan had been through during the war against America. This war, however, lays a radical effect on the whole nation including geishas. And that add more excitement to the events.
It’s really a novel that worth reading. Thanks Arthur Golden for your masterpiece.
